Louis Nicholas initiated as
"Honorary Member, Friend of the Arts" - On
Sunday, January 16, at 2:30 P.M., Louis Nicholas was initiated as
"Honorary Member, Friend of the Arts" by Nashville Alumnae
Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity. The ceremony
was held in the Social Religious Building on the campus of Peabody
College of Vanderbilt University.
At 3:00 PM, there was a reception and musicale in honor of Nicholas.
Fay Thompson presided in the absence of the chapter president, Jean
Parks. Over 60 people were present at the event. Yvonne May, Psi B
Province officer, gave a few welcoming remarks. Former voice students of
Nicholas who were present were identified in the audience. Also present
was Dr. Gerald Moore, who was identified as "Honorary Member,
Friend of the Arts" by Zeta Omicron in the Spring of 1999.
First on the program was Kay Reynolds, mezzo-soprano, accompanied by
Peggy Pellet (SAI), singing "We Sing to Him," by Purcell, and
"O Pretres de Baal," by Meyerbeer. Tillium, a trio
ensemble consisting of Kate Caswell, flute, Linda Harmon (SAI), piano,
and Sari DeLeon-Reist, cello, played "Nina," by Pergolesi,
"Mandoline," by Debussy, "Under the Linden Tree,"
arranged by Magani, and "Autumn Evening" and
"Serenade" by Felipe Gaubert.
Margaret Bredemann, soprano, accompanied Mary Gilbert (SAI),
delighted the audience with "Ernani, Involami" from Ernani,
by Verdi, followed by "Hear Ye" from Elijah, by
Mendelssohn. Janice Moore (SAI), pianist, played Chopin's "Etude in
Ab," usually known as "The Aeolian Harp," and
"Toccata," by Francois Poulenc. Winnie Smith Breast (SAI),
soprano, and Jane Kirchner (SAI), flute, performed "Searching for
Lambs," by Ralph Vaughan Williams. The musicale was concluded with
the singing of "Thanks for the Memories," with special words
by Breast.
All of the vocalists were former students of Nicholas.
